Paper & Document Formatting Tools

Work out how many words fit on a page at any font, size and spacing, convert a page count into characters and back, and check an essay against its word limit as you type. Then the physical side of print: paper sizes in every unit, the printable area a set of margins leaves you, how thick a paper stock really is, the scale a printer will apply, the bleed a commercial press expects, and the imposition order for a stapled booklet. The citation tools build an APA 7 title page or an MLA heading block exactly to spec and print it.

About Paper & Document Formatting Tools

Documents live between two measurements that rarely agree: words and pages. A page holds about 275 words double-spaced in 12 pt Times New Roman and about 500 single-spaced, so “how many words is 5 pages” has a real answer that depends on the typography, and the same is true of every conversion between a word count, a character count and a page count. The tools here do that arithmetic through an explicit lookup table and show the assumption behind each estimate rather than presenting a single figure as fact. The print side is where the expensive mistakes happen: A4 and Letter differ by 3.3% in area and are not interchangeable, a page size that is not what the file declares will silently scale or crop in a print run, a bleed is artwork beyond the trim rather than a margin inside it, and a booklet's pages have to be printed in an imposition order that folding then puts right. Every length is converted to millimetres before it is used, so a tool mixing inches and millimetres cannot drift, and outputs that are estimates say so and give their basis. Nothing duplicates a neighbouring category: general text statistics and case conversion are in Text Tools, PDF manipulation is in the PDF category, and printable sheets are in Printable Generators. Everything runs in your browser, including the PDF reader, so a manuscript or a client proof is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on a page?

About 275 on a double-spaced page of 12 pt Times New Roman, which is the reference figure these tools are built on, and about 500 on the same page single-spaced. The number moves with the font as well as the spacing — Arial sets wider than Times, so it holds roughly 10% fewer words — and with the point size, where the words that fit scale with the square of the size ratio. Every figure on this site is an estimate from that table, and the page shows the row it used so the number can be checked rather than trusted.

Are A4 and Letter the same size?

No, and the difference is the classic cause of a cropped print run. A4 is 210 × 297 mm and Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm, so Letter is wider and shorter and 3.3% smaller in area. Neither fits the other at 100%: A4 on Letter crops the bottom, Letter on A4 crops the edges, and “fit to page” quietly reduces everything by around 5%, which is small enough to go unnoticed.

What is a bleed, and how is it different from a margin?

A margin is empty paper inside the finished size; a bleed is artwork extending outside it, so that a fraction of a millimetre of drift at the guillotine still leaves colour at the edge instead of a white sliver. A commercial press typically asks for 3 mm on every edge, meaning the file is 6 mm larger in each dimension than the trimmed document, and expects nothing important within 3 mm of the trim line. The bleed calculator gives both numbers and draws the three bands to scale.

Is my document or PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. Every tool here runs in your browser, including the PDF page size checker, which reads each page's media box locally with pdf.js. There is no account, no server round-trip and no length limit, and an open page keeps working offline once it has loaded. The flip side is that nothing is stored: closing the tab clears what you typed, so anything worth keeping should be printed or copied first.

How accurate are the paper thickness figures?

To within the density assumption, and no closer. Thickness is grammage divided by the stock's density, which is exact for the density used, but a published caliper is a range rather than a constant and bulk varies batch to batch and sharply between coated and uncoated grades. The tool shows the density and bulk it assumed for every stock and labels the result an estimate, so the number is useful for choosing between stocks and not for ordering to a tolerance.
