Print Scaling Calculator
Work out the print scale that fits a page onto different paper, and what each scale does to the sheet.
What is Print Scaling?
Print scaling is the setting that silently changes a document. “Fit to page” reduces a page by whatever the difference in sheet sizes demands — often 5% to 8%, which is invisible on screen and obvious when a 12 pt document comes out at 11.3 pt — while “fill page” enlarges until one axis is covered and crops the other. The two are different settings, they produce different results, and neither is the same as 100%, which prints at true size and crops whatever does not fit.
How it works
The source page and the target paper are compared on both axes. The minimum of the two ratios is the uniform scale that fits the whole sheet inside the target, and the maximum is the scale that fills it with no white edges; the tool reports both, distinguishes them in words as well as in numbers, and states whether the current setting crops. A custom source size is accepted as well as a standard one, and a table applies the same comparison to every common target sheet, so the effect of changing the paper in the printer can be seen before the job is sent.
