Essay Word Count Checker
Live word, character, sentence and paragraph counts checked against a target range.
What is Word Count Checker?
A word limit is a range, not a number, and the two figures that decide whether a piece of writing reads well are hidden inside the total. Average words per sentence is the readability figure a marker notices without naming — below about 12 and the prose is choppy, above about 25 and it is hard to follow. Reading time is what a word count becomes when the essay has to be delivered aloud, and speaking is considerably slower than reading: around 130 words a minute against 200. And the passage that is 40 words over the limit is usually one paragraph doing too much.
How it works
Words are counted as whitespace-delimited tokens containing real characters, characters include and exclude spaces separately, and paragraphs are blank-line separated blocks. Sentence counting is the part that needs care: terminators are found by splitting the text on runs of full stop, exclamation mark and question mark, with decimal points and common abbreviations masked first, because counting terminators instead of splitting on them miscounts any text that ends without a full stop and inflates the total on anything containing “3.5” or “et al.”. The verdict against the target range is shown as a word difference rather than a tick, so the distance to the limit is always visible, and the page estimate converts the count into double-spaced pages at the reference setting.
