What is Words ↔ Characters?

Character counts are what CMS fields, meta descriptions, SMS segments and database columns actually store, while word counts are what assignments are set in, so the conversion between them is routine. It rests on one assumption: the average number of letters in a word. Five letters plus the separating space, six characters per word, is the long-standing editorial average, and it is a good one for ordinary prose — but technical writing runs to seven or eight letters, and short-form copy can be well under five, which moves the answer by 30% or more.

How it works

Characters are words multiplied by the average word length plus the separator width, and the inverse divides them out. Both numbers are separate inputs, so a document that uses no spaces between words — CJK text, or a count that strips whitespace — can be modelled by setting the separator to zero. A table shows the same word count at average lengths of four to eight letters, which is the honest version of the answer: the conversion is a family of results, and the table is what makes the default visible as a default.
