MLA Heading Generator (MLA 9)
Generate an MLA heading block with the date in MLA format and a live page preview.
What is MLA Heading?
MLA has no title page. Instead, four lines sit flush left at the top of the first page — your name, the instructor, the course, and the date — followed by the title centred on the next double-spaced line. The date is the detail most often got wrong: MLA writes it day-first, as “4 September 2026”, not “September 4, 2026”. The block is also the last thing anyone adds to an essay, which is why it is a common source of a missing course code or a wrong date.
How it works
The date is built from a real date field, so the month name and the day-first ordering are produced by the tool rather than typed, and the rest of the block is assembled in the order the specification requires. The preview is a Letter sheet at a 1-inch margin with the heading at the top and the title centred beneath it, drawn at the double-spaced line height, so the spacing can be seen rather than assumed. Anything left blank keeps a placeholder and is listed under the preview, and the block is also available as plain text for pasting into a word processor.
