What is WPM Calculator?

Most people measure their typing speed once, with a phone stopwatch, and then want the division done. The interesting part is that "words per minute" has three defensible definitions and they give different answers for the same session: written words divided by minutes, characters divided by five divided by minutes (what a typing test reports), and the same figure with uncorrected errors subtracted. Showing all three is the only way to compare your number honestly against someone else's.

How it works

The word count is divided by the elapsed time, entered as separate hours, minutes and seconds because that is how a stopwatch reads — or typed as `mm:ss`, which fills those fields. When a character count is supplied the five-keystroke figure is computed beside it, and the average word length the two imply is reported, since that is the number that explains why the two figures differ. A table applies the measured pace to texts of known length, so the result turns into a plan.
