What is Reading Speed?

Reading speed is the figure that makes every other reading estimate possible: a book's completion time, a chapter's length in minutes, whether a document fits in the meeting. It is measured by timing a known quantity of text, and the number that falls out is words per minute. Silent reading has a wide natural range — about 150 to 250 words per minute for most adults, with comprehension falling away above roughly 400 — so the useful part of the answer is not the number alone but where it sits in that range.

How it works

The word count is divided by the elapsed time converted to minutes, giving words per minute, and the same reading is reported as words per second and as seconds per word so the pace can be read at whatever granularity is useful. Elapsed time is entered as hours, minutes and seconds separately rather than as a single decimal, because the measurement people actually take is a stopwatch reading. The pace is then placed in a named band — reading aloud, ordinary silent reading, practised reading, skimming — and the band text says what comprehension assumption it carries, because speed without comprehension is a different measurement.
