Characters per Minute Calculator
Work out characters per minute from a pasted text and the time it took, with the words-per-minute equivalent.
What is Characters per Minute?
Characters per minute is the character-based counterpart of words per minute, and it is the right measurement whenever the character count is the constraint rather than the word count: subtitles and captions have character budgets, transcription is billed and paced by characters, and code and spreadsheets are typed with far more punctuation per word. Because a typing test defines a word as five characters, the two figures are related but not interchangeable — the characters-per-minute number is the raw measurement the words-per-minute figure is derived from.
How it works
Characters are counted exactly: every non-space character for the headline figure, every character including spaces for the second, so the two conventions cannot be confused. The count is divided by the elapsed time in minutes, and the reciprocal pace is named in words-per-minute terms using the five-keystroke convention. A table then applies the measured rate to one, two, five, ten and thirty minutes, which turns a rate into a volume.
