Backspace & Error Rate Calculator
Work out how often you have to correct yourself, as a percentage of every key you press.
What is Error Rate Calculator?
Correction rate is the measurement that predicts whether extra speed will survive contact with real work. Two typists at 80 words per minute are doing different things if one backspaces once per hundred keys and the other once per twenty: the first has speed, the second has a burst whose corrections cost attention that the raw figure does not count. It is also the number that improves fastest with practice, which makes it the one worth watching.
How it works
Backspace presses are divided by every key pressed — characters plus the corrections, not the final text, because dividing by the final text understates the cost by leaving the mistyped characters out of the denominator. The reciprocal is reported as "one correction every N keys", which is easier to act on than a percentage, and a small table applies the current volume of typing to the rates worth comparing against so the percentage has a size.
