Average Word Length Calculator
Average characters per word in a text, in letters and in characters, with a length distribution.
What is Word Length?
Average word length is how text difficulty gets measured without counting syllables: longer words are usually rarer words, and on ordinary prose the two measures track each other closely enough that the Automated Readability Index is built on length alone. It is also the conversion factor behind every word-to-character estimate — six characters per word is the long-standing editorial average, and it is right for prose but well off for technical text. Two figures matter and they differ: letters per word, which the readability formulas use, and characters per word, which counts everything that is not a space, including punctuation and digits.
How it works
Words are tokenised as runs of letters and digits with internal apostrophes and hyphens kept, so “don't” and “well-known” are one word rather than two. Letters are counted as alphabetic characters only, giving letters per word, while characters per word divides every non-space character by the word count — which is why it runs about one higher. A histogram shows how word lengths are distributed and the longest words are listed, since a text whose average is dragged up by four technical terms is a different problem from one where every word is merely long.
