What is Gradient?

The gradient packs every partial derivative of a scalar function into one vector. It points in the direction of steepest increase, and its magnitude is how steep that increase is — which is why gradient descent optimisation follows it.

How it works

Each variable present in the expression is differentiated in turn with the others held constant, and the results are shown as a vector and as individual components. A zero component means the function is locally flat in that direction.
