What is Derivative?

A derivative measures the instantaneous rate of change of a function: how much f changes for a tiny change in x. It is the slope of the tangent line, and the rules for computing it — power, product, quotient and chain — are what calculus is largely about.

How it works

The function is parsed into an expression tree and differentiated recursively by the standard rules, so the result is exact rather than a finite-difference approximation. The grammar is deliberately narrow and named on the page: polynomials, sin, cos, tan, exp, ln, sqrt and abs, combined with +, −, ×, ÷ and ^.
