Syllable Counter
Count the syllables in a pasted text, with a per-word breakdown and the syllable distribution.
What is Syllable Counter?
Syllable counting is the vocabulary half of every readability formula and a tool worth having on its own for poetry and for checking why a score came out where it did. It is also the one measurement in this category that is genuinely approximated: no counter that is not backed by a pronunciation dictionary can be exact, and words like queue, business and every are the standing counterexamples. Getting close on ordinary prose is achievable; being right on every word is not.
How it works
The category's shared syllable heuristic groups vowels and applies two rules that earn their keep — a silent final e is dropped, so made and whale are one syllable, and a consonant followed by le is its own syllable, so table and little are two — with a syllabic -ed rule that keeps wanted at two while walked stays one. The same total and per-word counts drive the readability formulas, so a score and this table can never disagree, and the list of words by syllable count is shown so the heuristic can be inspected rather than trusted.
