Sentence Length Analyzer
Average, shortest and longest sentence in a pasted text, with a distribution chart of sentence lengths.
What is Sentence Lengths?
Sentence length is the most improvable thing about most writing, and the average is a poor way to see it. Two texts can average eighteen words per sentence while one is a steady eighteen and the other alternates between five and forty — and it is the second that reads badly. What matters is the distribution plus the outliers: a run of very short sentences reads as choppy, a run of very long ones as impenetrable, and a single forty-word sentence carrying three ideas is usually the paragraph's real problem.
How it works
The text is split into sentences using the same splitter the readability formulas use — terminators found after masking decimal points, common abbreviations and initials, with a final sentence that has no terminator still counted. Each sentence is tokenised to get its word count, and the results are reported as an average, a median, the extremes and a histogram bucketed in tens from under ten words to over forty. Sentences are listed longest first so the outliers can be read rather than only counted, and the average is reported beside the median because a handful of very long sentences moves the mean and leaves the median alone.
