What is Percentile?

The pth percentile is the value below which p percent of the data falls — the 90th percentile of a growth chart is the height that 90% of children are under. It generalises the median (the 50th percentile) and the quartiles (the 25th and 75th), and it works on any amount of data.

How it works

The method is linear interpolation between the two nearest sorted values, the one spreadsheets expose as PERCENTILE.INC: the target position is (p ÷ 100) × (n − 1) and the answer is blended from the values on either side of it. The neighbouring values and the 0-based position are printed because the competing nearest-rank method gives a different number on the same data, and knowing which one a mark scheme expects matters.
