Board Foot Calculator
Board feet of lumber from nominal thickness, width, length and quantity.
What is Board Feet?
A board foot is the volume unit the North American lumber trade prices hardwood in: a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 1 foot long. The formula is (thickness″ × width″ × length′) ÷ 12 — thickness and width in inches, length in feet, which is where the ÷12 comes from. Board feet use *nominal* dimensions, the rough-sawn size before dressing: a 2×6 is 2 board feet per foot of length even though it measures 1½ × 5½. Also called board-footage or FBM (feet-board-measure).
How it works
The nominal dimensions multiply, divide by 12, and multiply by the quantity; the per-piece figure is shown beside the total so the order can be sanity-checked against the price list. An optional price per board foot gives the estimated cost. Finished dimensional lumber (studs, two-bys at the yard) is priced per piece instead — the note explains the difference.
