Carpet Calculator
Linear feet of carpet to order for a room, from the roll width.
What is Carpet?
Carpet comes off a roll of fixed width — 12 ft or 15 ft in the US — and is priced by the linear foot, not by area. Ordering 'square feet of floor' is the classic mistake: a 10 × 10 room needs a 12-ft-wide strip 10 ft long, which is 120 ft² bought, not 100. Strips run the room's length so seams are minimised; each extra strip across the width adds one seam.
How it works
Strips = room width ÷ roll width, rounded up; linear feet = room length × strips, with the waste percentage applied and rounded up. The seam count and the purchased area (linear feet × roll width) are shown, because both figures appear on quotes — one from the fitter, one from the pricing.
