What is Difference of Squares?

The difference of squares is the most-used factoring pattern in algebra: a² − b² always factors as (a + b)(a − b), because the cross terms in the expansion cancel. It is what turns 9x² − 16 into (3x + 4)(3x − 4).

How it works

Each input term is parsed as a monomial, squared, and reassembled into the two factors, with the sign folded in so a negative term still produces the conventional (a + b)(a − b) shape. The steps spell out what each square is.
