What is Absolute Value Inequality?

An absolute value measures distance from a point. So |x − a| < b says x is within b units of a — one interval — while |x − a| > b says x is farther away than b, which splits into two intervals.

How it works

A less-than splits into the double inequality a − b < x < a + b; a greater-than splits into two cases joined by OR. A negative b is handled as the geometry it is: nothing is a negative distance, so a less-than has no solution and a greater-than has every real number.
