Acceleration Converter
Convert m/s², ft/s², standard gravity, and galileos.
What is Acceleration?
Acceleration is the rate at which velocity changes, so its units are a speed unit per second: m/s² in SI, ft/s² in US work. Multiples of standard gravity (g = 9.80665 m/s²) are used for g-force and vehicle figures, and the galileo (Gal = 1 cm/s²) is the CGS unit used in gravimetry.
How it works
Every unit is a factor to m/s²: one foot per second squared is exactly 0.3048 m/s² from the defined foot, and one g is the defined standard gravity 9.80665 m/s² rather than a local measured value. So a chain of conversions is exact apart from display rounding.

Examples
Vehicle figures
Enter 9.80665 m/s² and read 1 g — or convert a 0–60 figure's average acceleration into g.
Common mistakes
g-force is acceleration, not force
"2 g" means twice the acceleration of gravity, not twice the force. The actual force depends on the mass being accelerated.
g read as grams
The g in an acceleration is standard gravity (9.80665 m/s²), not the gram. Convert mass with the weight converter instead.
Frequently asked questions
How many m/s² is 1 g?
9.80665 m/s², the standard acceleration due to gravity. Local gravity varies slightly with latitude and altitude.
What is a Gal?
The galileo, the CGS unit of acceleration: 1 Gal = 1 cm/s² = 0.01 m/s². Gravity is about 980 Gal, which is why it appears in gravity surveys.
