What is Columns?

A column splitter/merger for plain text: split mode breaks lines into cells, merge mode joins cells back — with empty-cell handling.

How it works

Split splits each line on the chosen delimiter (optional empty-cell drop) and outputs tab-separated columns; merge reverses it.

  1. Enter your input. Type or paste your input into the field above — the tool responds instantly.
  2. Review the result. Output updates live as you type. Everything runs entirely in your browser.
  3. Copy or download. Use the Copy button to grab the result, or Download to save it as a file.

Examples

Splitting names and lists

Split 'John Smith' into two columns by space — or a pipe-separated list into separate fields, with the delimiter of your choice.

Common mistakes

Irregular delimiters

Multiple spaces or mixed tabs throw off naive splits. A collapse-whitespace option normalizes the input first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I merge columns back together?

Yes — a merge mode joins fields with a separator you choose.

Does it work on CSV-like data?

It treats input as plain text lines; for proper CSV use the CSV tools instead.
