What is MGRS?

MGRS builds on UTM: a zone number, a latitude band letter, two 100 km square letters, then easting/northing digits. It is the NATO standard for grid references.

How it works

Coordinates are projected with the WGS84 UTM formulas (k0 = 0.9996), then encoded with the latitude-band and 100 km-square lettering scheme; decoding validates the letters per zone and inverts the projection.
