What is Current Divider?

When a current reaches two parallel resistances it splits between them in proportion to their conductance, so the smaller resistor carries the larger share. It is the mirror image of the voltage divider and the rule people reverse, which is why the page names which branch carries the most current next to the numbers rather than leaving it to be worked out.

How it works

Each branch's current is the total scaled by the *other* branch's resistance over the sum, so R1 and R2 appear crossed over — that is the whole trick. Both branches sit across the same voltage, which is why the parallel equivalent resistance and the voltage across the pair fall out of the same numbers. The dissipation in each resistor is reported as well, because the branch carrying the most current is the branch running hot.
